Powerful open-air sound surviving Oklahoma weather

Choctaw Landing is a $230 million casino, hotel, and entertainment resort in Hochatown, Oklahoma. The two wings of its L-shaped building frame an outdoor amphitheater with a stage and natural seating for a couple hundred guests. The sound system had to meet stringent sound-quality and precision-coverage requirements, and survive Oklahoma weather, including winds exceeding 80 mph.

The venue

An amphitheater built into the heart of the resort

Choctaw Landing sits in one wing of an L-shaped building and the rooms in the other, and the space naturally created in the center of the two wings became an outdoor stage and amphitheater.

Restaurants, bars, and food and drink stands surround the natural seating area for a couple hundred people. It is a space for guests to relax with entertainment, day or night, which set a clear bar for the sound.

The challenge

Stage-quality coverage outdoors — through Oklahoma weather

The casino specified a system that exceeded sound-quality and precision-coverage requirements, then asked it to live outdoors year-round. Oklahoma weather meant the loudspeakers had to withstand winds exceeding 80 mph.

The amphitheater hosts a range of entertainment groups, so the rig had to carry full-range music across the seating while keeping the sound contained to the area.

The solution

Weatherized line arrays, dead-hung for the long term

AVI Systems' Dallas-based business unit specified 12 Electro-Voice XLD281-FG line-array loudspeakers in arrays of 6 per side, each supported by a pair of XCS312-FG subwoofers, with an additional XCS sub flown in the center. The FG models carry a fiberglass coating that fully weatherizes them for the outdoor install.

Each 3-way XLD281-FG combines an 8" neodymium LF transducer, an 8" neodymium LF/MB transducer, and two 2" voice-coil compression drivers through two Hydra plane wave generators into a 120° x 10° waveguide. Coverage Control Technology controls horizontal beamwidth down to 200 Hz, so the left and right arrays deliver high-intelligibility audio with predictable pattern control. Each XCS312 extends low frequency to 40 Hz in a cardioid configuration using three DVX3120 forced-air-cooled 12" transducers.

The result

A controlled, clear fullrange sound performance that stays put

With the right models selected for the optimal combination of sonic performance and resilience against the outdoors, the Electro-Voice system became a permanent fixture in the new venue. The left and right arrays deliver full-range, high-intelligibility audio with precise pattern control, keeping sound contained to the amphitheater.

The XCS312 subwoofers add focused, powerful bass for the various entertainment groups using the stage, and the dead-hung truss was engineered to last.
