Celtic Park, Glasgow, Scotland

60,000 seats to cover with clear audio for the world's loudest fans

Celtic Park is the 60,000-seat home of Celtic Football Club and one of the loudest stadiums in the game. The 2017 system still performed, yet eight years on the club wanted the efficiency and control that newer electronics could bring. The brief was simple: keep the existing EV loudspeakers, and replace the dated amplifier models for more power, DSP and headroom - and reduce the carbon footprint.

The venue

A legendary stadium with one of the most demanding sound environments

Celtic Park stands among the loudest football grounds anywhere. Match-day sound has to cut through that energy, carry safety announcements without question, and hold up across the full bowl.

The existing 2017 system, built on Electro-Voice EVH and EVF loudspeakers, still does the job. After eight years, though, newer Dynacord electronics promised real gains in power, processing, and running cost.

“Celtic Park is one of the loudest stadiums in the country, maybe even the world!”

The challenge

Modernize the sound system with newer audio electronics

The 52 Electro-Voice EVH and 60 EVF loudspeakers were performing well and stayed in place. The opportunity sat in the rack. Dated amps and signal processors that could be replaced with new gear to achieve better sound, more power headroom and DSP options, and lower energy use.

Idle power and UPS load were a real cost for a venue of this scale. The upgrade had to drive the same speakers louder and cleaner while cutting what the system burned when the stands were empty.

  • A dated audio electronics backbone reaching the end of its useful life

  • 52 EVH and 60 EVF loudspeakers to retain and drive

  • High idle power consumption and UPS demand to reduce

  • Matchday sound clarity to overcome 60, 000 cheers

  • Reduce complexity that staff could manage without specialist skills

The solution

Deploy a state-of-the-art system drive by Dynacord

North specified a Dynacord-based backbone comprising of IPX Series multichannel networked DSP apmlifiers. 13 IPX 10:8 and 2 IPX 5:4 amplifiers, a pair of MXE5 Matrix Mix Engines, and SONICUE Sound System Software, all driving the existing EVH and EVF loudspeakers, everything fully networked using Dante audio. A single IPX amplifier delivers up to 20,000 watts of power density, so the same speakers now have far more headroom and processing behind them.

ecoRAIL technology can cut power consumption by more than 50 percent and halves the UPS requirement, trimming running cost across the venue. SONICUE's built-in panel designer let North build a professional control interface without advanced design work.

“The difference in performance for the EVH loudspeakers is amazing. You have much more readily available power and the processing on them gives a marked improvement in clarity and control”

The result

More power, more DSP, lower cost

The same loudspeakers now sound clearer and more controlled, with readily available power that the old electronics could not supply. For one of the loudest grounds in the game, that headroom matters on every match day.

The new IPX amplifiers that have ecoRAIL technology on bord dramatically reduce power consumption and a halved UPS requirement, so the gains in performance arrive alongside lower running cost — the case the club made when they chose the upgrade.

  • A significant improvement in clarity and control on the existing speakers

  • More power and headroom across the bowl

  • Significant lower operational cost

  • A halved UPS requirement

  • Staff-friendly control through customized GUIs built in SONICUE Sound System Software
